XnView Review

XnView

XnView’s graphical interface very much resembles a Windows Explorer viewing of a directory of images in thumbnail mode, except for the adjustable viewing pane for enlarged viewing of single images. One can easily create slideshows, contact sheets or even web pages in a variety of formats. The web page creator is easy to use and creates simple gallery pages for chosen images along with the thumbnails, css and javascript required. Although not billed as a web gallery creator, XnView does this as well or even better than many dedicated gallery creation packages. A variety of formats and color schemes are provided and it would be possible to customize the pages created through the html and css for the pages generated. This makes it possible to quickly create the skeleton for a more elaborate web gallery styled to fit with other pages on one’s site.

XnView browser window:

It is easy to access image properties, EXIF information and the histogram of an image. Images can be grouped in categories as well.

Although XnView is not billed as an image editor, some basic editing is possible, such as cropping, resizing, rotating, etc. These features make for good all around image organization and control without an overload of editing capabilities. XnView does what it is designed to do effectively and efficiently. It would be a valuable addition to any suite of image management tools.
